President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said that Justice in Brazil privileges the richest, citing Lampião, but that “today it is no longer like that”. The president mentioned the Federal Police operation this Thursday, 25th, against the owners of Lojas Americanas as an example that the richest are also targets of justice in his government. The mention made by the president is his attempt to impose a narrative that his government combats corruption and irregularities committed by the richest in the country.
“In Lampião’s time, he said that anyone who has 20 thousand réis will never be arrested. It was true. Today it is no longer like that. Today, the Federal Police blocked R$54 billion from that citizen of Lojas Americanas who carried out a R$40 billion scam in this country. Things are moving little by little, but it takes time”, he stated.
The president said that “every time we do something, we have to know that there is also a lawyer on that side”. “Sometimes we think it’s won, but it’s not won, because often in Brazil the law favors those who have more money than the poor. This is the concrete fact”, he declared.

The president also stated that he “has a side, he knows where it came from, and as long as I am president of the Republic, the poor people will have my preference in dealing with social inclusion policies”.
Lula also spoke about the topic of defending Brazilian sovereignty and said that “we do not accept that outside roosters come to crow on our land, which is Brazil”. “We don’t want to be better than anyone, but we don’t accept that anyone wants to be better than us. We want to be equal”, he stated.
