Government wants to limit advertising of bets in the World Cup

Measure should come into force in the 2nd phase of the tournament after negative repercussions on networks regarding sponsorship in broadcasts

The Minister of Finance, , said this Friday (June 26, 2026) that the government will announce in the coming days a limitation on bookmaker advertisements in broadcasts of the 2026 World Cup. In conversation with journalists in Beijing, Durigan stated that the idea is for the restrictions to come into force in the 2nd phase of the tournament, which starts on Sunday (June 28). The Brazilian team’s knockout match will be on Monday (June 29) against Japan.

The minister informed that the Ministry of Finance is already working on the text to limit advertisements and is studying whether the measure will come as an ordinance from the ministry or as a provisional measure from the Presidency of the Republic. Durigan did not say how the government intends to tighten the crackdown on advertisements, but at least a warning from the ministry about the risks of betting should be displayed immediately after the advertisement.

The idea is to treat betting house advertisements like beer commercials and cigarette packs. Durigan suggested the following message: “The Ministry of Finance warns that betting is bad for your health and makes you lose income”.

The display of betting advertisements during World Cup game broadcasts has become one of the most talked about topics on social media in recent days. Most of the criticism is directed at comments made by broadcast teams throughout the matches about odds – bookmakers’ quotes for the results.

CazéTV was the main focus of complaints on social media. The company also filed a complaint with the National Consumer Secretariat of the Ministry of Justice on Wednesday (June 24) on suspicion of irregular advertising by bookmakers during World Cup broadcasts.

Durigan stated that the measure is not exclusive to the company, but cited it as an example of the practice that the government wants to curb. “We have notified both CazéTV and all the bets that are sponsoring and we will demand and I will foresee new obligations for bets and the media so that there is no abuse of advertising during the World Cup”disse Durigan.

The minister will return from China to Brazil this Friday (June 26) and is expected to move forward with this agenda in the coming days.
