In Latvia, two people convicted of espionage for Russia were sentenced. A court in Riga sentenced a man and a woman to six and five years in prison for collecting and passing on classified information. The verdict is not yet final, informs the DPA agency.

The man, who had previously been convicted of espionage in another case, was accused of asking another detainee to find out the names of people suspected of espionage. According to the indictment, the man subsequently obtained the personal data of three people, which the co-accused woman was supposed to hand over during her trip to Russia.

Given the time they have already spent in custody, the woman is to serve another two years and ten months, while the man is to spend another three years and ten months in prison. Both remain in custody until the verdict becomes final. It is possible to appeal against the judgment. Latvia, which is a member of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance, neighbors Russia and its ally Belarus.
