‘It’s a family issue’, says Tarcísio about Michelle and Flávio Bolsonaro’s fight

The governor of São Paulo and pre-candidate for re-election, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), minimized this Friday, the 26th, the public friction between the former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL) and the PL pre-candidate for the Presidency, Flávio Bolsonaro, by classifying it as a “family issue” and stating that the two must reach an understanding.

“I think this issue between Michelle and him is a family issue and I am sure that, soon, they will reach an understanding and can continue together”, said Tarcísio at a press conference after inaugurating the so-called Praça da Cidadania in the municipality of Diadema, in the Metropolitan Region.

In a video published on social media on Wednesday, 24, Michelle stated that she was “mistreated, humiliated and disrespected” by Flávio during a telephone conversation. According to the national president of PL Mulher, the senator said that she “had arrived yesterday” and “didn’t understand anything about politics”, in an attempt to keep her away from party decisions.

'It's a family issue', says Tarcísio about Michelle and Flávio Bolsonaro's fight

The conflict began in December, when Michelle criticized the Ceará PL’s support for Ciro Gomes (PSDB) and defended her ally Priscila Costa in the Senate. Flávio’s group, however, preferred to support Alcides Fernandes, father of federal deputy André Fernandes.

In response, Flávio stated that he “never” disrespected, mistreated or humiliated a woman. “I would never do it with my own father’s wife,” said the senator, reinforcing that the group’s priority is to defeat the PT in the elections. Afterwards, Michelle denied that there was a “fight” between the two.

In Tarcísio’s assessment, the political group needs to remain united in the face of a dispute that he classified as difficult. According to the governor, the electoral clash should involve “projects and visions of the future”, and the cohesion of the Bolsonarist camp will be decisive in facing it.

Republican support for Flávio

Tarcísio also said that there is a tendency for the Republicans to support Flávio Bolsonaro’s pre-candidacy for the Presidency, but considered that the alliance will depend on the construction of regional platforms. According to him, the party has competitive names for state governments and hopes that the PL will make concessions in some states to make a broader partnership viable.

At the state level, the governor stated that he seeks to bring together PSDB, Citizenship and the federation formed by the acronyms on his platform. In Tarcísio’s assessment, the support would add value to the campaign and help to form a solid base and a “large electoral bloc” in the State. So far, ten parties support his re-election: Republicans, PL, MDB, PP, PSD, União Brasil, Podemos, Novo, Solidariedade and PRD.

Tarcísio avoided commenting on the choice of former São Paulo governor and former Minister of Entrepreneurship Márcio França (PSB) as vice-president on the ticket of his opponent, Fernando Haddad (PT). Regarding the dispute for the Senate, he only stated that the strategy has not changed: the group maintains support for the pre-candidacies of federal deputy Guilherme Derrite (PP) and the president of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, André do Prado (PL).

“We have been running away from provocations, we have been running away. We are being attacked a lot, a lot attacked, and we are not responding, because we are focused on work”, said Tarcísio. The statement comes amid exchanges of criticism between the governor and Haddad. On June 1, for example, Tarcísio said that the PT member was the “best Finance Minister in Paraguay”.
