A nursing assistant was detained after searches of his home found several human body parts stolen from cemeteries and the hospital where he works. The suspect is fascinated by anatomy and even ate the remains.
Hungarian police detained a 30-year-old nursing assistant, accused of illegally collect human body parts in abandoned cemeteries and at his workplace, after the discovery of skulls, bones and other remains in his apartment in Budapest.
The suspect was arrested on June 17 after Hungary’s National Investigation Department received information alleging that he stored human remains both at the hospital where he worked and at his home. A subsequent search of his apartment revealed a disturbing collection which included several skulls, an entire leg, a human hand, and a human face reconstructed from facial skin. Investigators also found additional bones inside a suitcase.
Police said officers also recovered a heart preserved in a jar. Forensic experts are working to determine whether the organ is of human or animal origin, says .
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to having collected the body parts, telling investigators that he had a particular fascination with human anatomy. According to the police, he also stated that he had prepared food using parts of human bodies and having consumed it. Authorities have not released further details about the statement and forensic examinations continue.
The man is detained for suspected illegal use of corpses. However, investigators say other charges may be filed once the origin of the recovered remains is determined.
In a statement, police described the suspect as someone with a keen interest in anatomy and pathology, who I also liked dissecting animals. Investigators believe he obtained some of the remains through his employment at the hospital, while others were taken from graves in abandoned cemeteries in Hungary and neighboring Slovakia.
As part of the investigation, the police seized the computer, laptops, tablets, cell phones, SIM cards and the suspect’s digital storage devices. Electronic equipment will be examined along with forensic analysis of recovered body parts to determine whether other crimes may have been committed.
Authorities did not disclose how long the alleged activities had been occurring or whether any security lapses at the hospital contributed to the removal of the remains. The investigation remains ongoing, with forensic experts working to identify the recovered body parts and determine how they were obtained.
