US expands aid to Venezuela after earthquake and sends troops and ship

The Southern Command of the US Armed Forces reported this Sunday (June 28, 2026) that it has reinforced humanitarian aid to Venezuela.

  • C-130 Hercules aircraft – for transporting cargo and personnel;
  • MV-22 Osprey aircraft (US Marine Corps) – for air transport of personnel and supplies;
  • helicopters UH-1Y Venom – for air support and transport in affected areas;
  • CH-47 Chinook helicopters (US Army) – for heavy transport of equipment and supplies;
  • MH-60R Seahawk aircraft (US Navy)in support of air and logistics operations;
  • 130 US Marines – scheduled to arrive at the Port of La Guaira within 24 hours, to reopen the port structure;
  • amphibious ship USS Fort Lauderdale – logistical support base and transport of supplies;
  • naval landing craft – used to bring humanitarian aid to the Port of La Guaira;
  • humanitarian assistance supplies – transported from the ship to affected areas;
  • US Space Force satellite images – for mapping devastated areas and supporting rescue planning;
  • airport support equipment and contingency logistics – used in the expansion of operations at Simón Bolívar airport.

Operation details

The Southern Command stated that the Contingency Response Element is already in Venezuelan territory and works together with local aviation authorities to safely expand the entry and exit flow of aircraft at the country’s main airport.

At the Port of La Guaira, closed after the earthquake, the US military must work to reopen the structure to allow supplies to arrive by sea.

According to the command, sailors and marines have already transported essential supplies from the ship USS Fort Lauderdale using landing craft.

The operations are described as completely self-sustainable, without the need for local resources, while teams continue to coordinate the humanitarian response.
