Both Spain and Greece on their knees: One country has completely dominated Europe in 2026, attracts the most tourists!

Italy continues to maintain its position as the most attractive tourist destination in Europe, according to the latest survey carried out by the Ansa agency. According to the survey results, up to 54% of Europeans named Italy as their favorite destination for the next summer vacation. It is followed by Spain with 51% and Greece with 46%.

France was chosen by 41% of respondents, Croatia by 34% and Great Britain by 30% of Europeans. The attractiveness of Italy significantly exceeds the European average, especially among Spaniards, of whom 61% expressed a positive attitude towards the country, as well as among residents of Poland, Southern and Central and Eastern Europe.

The survey entitled “Summer vacations of Europeans” was carried out by the company Confcommercio Turismo in cooperation with the agency Swg & PollingEurope. On the short list of countries, Italy is considered the most interesting destination, Spain the place with the best climate and Greece the most authentic country. Italy is also the second best country in terms of accommodation quality and the most pleasant travel destination, according to Ansa.

Europeans are most attracted to Italy by large historical cities, museums and archaeological sites. However, history and culture are not the only factors that interest potential visitors. Up to 28% of respondents said they would like to taste local food and wine and visit Italian villages.

Although history and art remain the main reasons to visit Italy, there is a growing interest in exploring lesser-known locations off the traditional routes. This trend helps reduce the risk of over-tourism in major destinations and promotes more authentic and high-quality experiences, states Ansa. According to the survey, interest in entertainment and shopping activities is more limited – only 12% of Europeans associate a holiday in Italy with shopping or entertainment, 9% with nightlife and only 6% with sports activities.
