After devastating earthquakes, Venezuela was hit by an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.6

Caracas and the state of La Guaira face another aftershock amid massive rescue efforts. After a pair of catastrophic earthquakes, tens of thousands of people remain missing.

A strong aftershock with a magnitude of 4.6 hit Venezuela’s Caracas and the state of La Guaira on Monday. It happened after a strong earthquake consisting of two main tremors with a magnitude of 7.2 and 7.5 on the night of Thursday, which claimed at least 1450 lives, writes TASR, citing journalists from the AFP agency and the American newspaper The New York Times.

Monday’s aftershock was recorded after 7:00 a.m. local time (1:00 p.m. CEST) as rescue services continued to search for survivors from last week’s earthquake. After the strong earthquake, in addition to material damage and deaths, the authorities also recorded 3,150 injured and 46,628 people missing.

The state of La Guaira was also the most affected by last week’s earthquake. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported even before this aftershock that there was a 48 percent chance of one or more aftershocks with a magnitude higher than five during the week.
