João Fonseca advances at Wimbledon after beating Bautista – 06/29/2026 – Sport

Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca, number 27 in the ATP rankings, advanced this Monday (29) to the second round of Wimbledon after beating Spaniard Roberto Bautista (183 in the world) in three sets by 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-3.

The 19-year-old from Rio, who reached the third round in 2025, needed 2 hours and 28 minutes to seal his victory and will face in the second round the winner of the match between the Dutchman Jesper De Jong (73rd) and the Australian Rinky Hijikata (82nd).

Despite his preparation on grass being altered by his elimination in the first round at the ATP 500 in Halle and his withdrawal from the ATP 250 in Eastbourne due to discomfort in his right shoulder, the Brazilian managed to close out a match in which he encountered particular resistance in the first set, which was decided in a tiebreak.

In the second half, in which both tennis players defended their serve, Fonseca managed to break in the tenth game and closed with his third ball.

In the third set, he broke Bautista’s serve in the second game and kept the distance until closing the match after 2 hours and 28 minutes.
