The suspect was accused of one crime of completed qualified homicide and six more attempted homicides. The list of crimes he was accused of also included one of dangerous driving of a road vehicle and another of possession of a prohibited weapon.
The man accused of having shot and killed a woman after an argument at the Palácio do Gelo shopping mall, in Viseu, in December 2024, was sentenced this Monday to 18 years in prison.
As a source at the Viseu Court told Lusa, after reading the ruling today, the man was “sentenced as a legal sentence to 18 years in prison”.
The trial began on March 11 and the events occurred in December 27, 2024 and originated from an altercation between members of two families who were in that shopping center.
The discussion evolved into physical attacks and, after leaving the shopping mall, the accused returned with a firearm (a 6.35 mm caliber pistol) and shot people from the other family.
Following the shooting, a 44-year-old woman (after being taken to the Hospital de São Teotónio, in Viseu) died and two other people were injured.
The suspect fled, but ended up turning himself in to the Civil Police on the same day. January 7, 2025accompanied by a lawyer.
“Only after seeing that my family was safe did I call my lawyer and hand myself over to the Judiciary Police,” the accused told the Viseu Court in March this year, at the beginning of the trial.
According to , the accused stated that, as he suspected would happen, Josefa’s family (who died as a result of a gunshot to the chest) tried to avenge her death. “They invaded the camp, broke everything with me and my family, vandalized cars and killed animals,” she said, explaining that she could not have handed herself in sooner because she had to defend her family.
After being heard in court, the man was awaiting trial in pre-trial detention and prohibited from contacting his sister and brother-in-law.
