Greece puts a bounty on the hare’s head puffer fish

Greece wants to push back the invasive hare’s-head puffer fish with a catch bonus. A pilot program is starting for professional fishermen around Crete and in the southern Aegean, which provides 5.33 euros per kilo of the animal. The species Lagocephalus sceleratus originally comes from the Indo-Pacific, migrated to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal and has been causing problems for fishermen there for years. In addition, the fish is poisonous: it can contain the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin.
