The deed took place in October 2025. An explosion in a residential area of the city of Pomezia, approximately 20 kilometers south of Rome, destroyed two of Ranucci’s cars. A journalist known for exposing corruption and mafia activities has been living under police protection for several years due to repeated death threats.
According to the carabinieri, four suspects were detained near Naples. They are suspected of illegal possession, transportation and use of explosives in a public place, threatening and causing damage. They were to commit their acts in a group using mafia methods. Three suspects ended up in pretrial detention, the fourth is under house arrest.
The investigation is led by the prosecutor’s office to fight the mafia in Rome, which is she requested the analysis of camera recordings, telephone connections and the explosive device itself. According to the police, the attackers acted on the instructions of as yet unidentified persons. The organizers were supposed to provide them with finances, SIM cards for mobile phones, legal assistance and also prepare for their eventual flight abroad.
