New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the official opening of the outdoor public pool season with an unusual swim. Dressed in a suit and tie, the mayor jumped into the Thomas Jefferson pool in East Harlem, accompanied by dozens of children.
The gesture revived a tradition that had not been followed for more than a decade by the city’s mayors. Despite the symbolic moment, Mamdani ended up entering the water without complying with the regulations for municipal swimming pools, which require the use of a swimsuit.
New York’s more than 50 public outdoor pools have opened their doors for the summer season and will remain open until September.
