The beginnings of human language are difficult to fathom. Spoken sounds do not leave behind any fossils and a direct comparison with other species is also not possible because the ability to use highly complex language has only been clearly confirmed in humans. Researchers at the University of Warwick in England are therefore suggesting a detour through laughter – something that humans share with their closest relatives, the great apes.
