PF investigates false advertisement scheme with images of the government and public bodies

This Wednesday (1st), the Federal Police launched Operation AD Phishing, which investigates the dissemination of false digital advertisements with improper use of the image of the federal government and other public institutions, with the aim of conferring supposed legitimacy on fraudulent pages.

The investigation identified 1,770 false advertisements linked to dozens of different pages and domains, with visual elements that associate the content with the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Some of the identified content had been changed with the help of artificial intelligence.

In total, nine search and seizure warrants are being executed in the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and São Paulo, all issued by the 10th Federal Criminal Court of the Federal District.

The targets of the operation may be liable for the crime of improper use of a seal or sign of a public institution. The Federal Police also investigate the possible commission of other crimes, such as embezzlement, ideological falsehood, criminal association and money laundering.
