Tennis: João Fonseca beats Jesper de Jong at Wimbledon – 07/01/2026 – Sport

Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca, number 27 in the ATP rankings, beat Dutchman Jesper de Jong (number 73 in the rankings) in three sets at the Wimbledon tournament, by 3 sets to 0 (6-1, 7-5 and 6-4) and advanced to the third round this Wednesday (1).

João won the first set 6-1 well. De Jong made it difficult in the second, but the Brazilian managed to close the score at 7-5. At the end of the third, the Dutch lost strength: 6-4. In his debut, he also beat Spaniard Roberto Bautista (183 in the world) in three sets by 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-3.

Now, Fonseca faces the winner between Roman Safiullin and Botic van de Zandschulp in the third round.

In 2025, the Brazilian fell in the third round of the tournament after losing to Chilean Nicholas Jarry by 3 sets to 1.

Now, in his second participation in the tournament, he is trying to extend his positive streak in Grand Slams after being the first Brazilian after Guga to reach the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, at the beginning of June.

It is worth remembering that grass is still considered the least favorable surface for João’s playing style.

The first two matches showed good adaptation, even after his preparation on grass was altered by his elimination in the first round at the ATP 500 in Halle and his withdrawal from the ATP 250 in Eastbourne due to discomfort in his right shoulder.
