A doctor would charge around a thousand euros to facilitate disability retirement processes. SIC recorded a transaction preparation with a hidden camera for an investigation in April.

This Wednesday, the Judiciary Police (PJ) detained a doctor from Benavente, in the district of Santarém, suspected of having received undue funds to facilitate disability reforms, a source from the police force confirmed to Lusa.

The alleged scheme in which the doctor would charge around a thousand euros to facilitate disability retirement processes, getting dozens of workers to retire due to disability in a public company, was revealed in April by SIC, which spoke to the suspect after she infiltrated the scheme, pretending to seek one of the pensions issued by the doctor.

At the time, the Medical Association opened an investigation into the doctor, as “alleged practices seriously harmful to medical ethics and deontology” were involved. The doctor, identified as Emuna Miawas at the time removed from the Benavente health center due to the suspicions that fell on her.

Emuna Mia answered “no” several times when asked directly if she asked for R$1,000 for anyone who wants to retire early. SIC captured images with a hidden camera of one of these transactions, where Emuna Mia is seen clearly saying that “the process” costs one thousand euros.

“I don’t think I’m doing anything illegal,” the suspect told SIC.

The scheme began six years ago, according to the channel, which says that the doctor charged up to R$1,000 in some cases. Dozens of disability retirements have been passed by Emuna Mia.
