West Ham striker Michail Antonio received good news hours before New Year’s Eve. The player, who suffered a serious traffic accident at the beginning of December, was released from hospital, where he underwent surgery to restore a fracture in a ‘lower limb’.

“Every year at this time, I’m asked what I’m grateful for, and every year I’ve struggled to find the right words. But this year, I know exactly what I’m grateful for: for being alive. I’m so grateful to God for giving me strength to continue and for allowing me to still be here”, said the 34-year-old player, who took advantage of the moment to send a message to his followers.

“I want to take this moment to acknowledge something I’ve realized: I spent so many years taking life for granted. I made plans for the next day, the next year, always taking tomorrow for granted. I watched close friends die, I witnessed others face experiences of almost death and yet I didn’t fully understand how precious life is.

Michail Antonio will have a long recovery ahead of him before he can wear the West Ham shirt again. The expectation is that the athlete will only return to the pitch in 2026.

The serious car accident involving the attacker occurred on a highway in the Essex region, England. A member of the Jamaica and West Ham national team, Antonio has 14 appearances in the English Championship and one in the League Cup. Very identified with the fans, he provided an assist and scored a goal.

In 13th place in the English Championship, with 23 points, West Ham returns to the field on Saturday, at 12 pm, against Manchester City, at the Etihad Stadium.
