“Water that unites” initiative will be presented in January

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries announced this Tuesday in parliament that the “Water that unites” initiative, which will build an interconnected water network for its efficient distribution, will be presented in January.

“The ‘Water that unites’ initiative will be presented in January,” said the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, José Manuel Fernandes, in a joint hearing with the budget, Finance and Public Administration and Agriculture and Fisheries committees.

This initiative aims to define investments for water storage, as well as the construction of an interconnected water network for efficient distribution.

In June, the Government created a working group, led by the president of Grupo Águas de Portugal, which will outline the country’s strategy for the efficient management, storage and distribution of water.

On May 22, the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, had already announced, in Faro, the interministerial initiative “Water that unites us”, which will design the new water strategy.

“The Government decided to create a working group that, guided by a multisectoral vision, will complete this initiative by the end of 2024, giving rise to a strategic framework for developing solutions and potential sources of public financing”, reads a statement set of the Ministries of the Environment and Agriculture, published at the time.

Among these solutions is the National Water Plan and an interconnected network for the storage and efficient distribution of water for agriculture, which will be called REGA.
