Climate change is exacerbating challenges related to water scarcity across the planet, and Europe and Portugal are an example of this. Changes in rainfall patterns, rising temperatures and extreme weather events are affecting water availability and distribution in our region as well. See the current useful levels of the dams that support supply in the Algarve region – Odelouca 17 hm3Odeleite 15 hm3, Bunk bed 13 hm3. Water scarcity is a threat that needs to be addressed with seriousness and commitment, by everyone without exception. Only through joint efforts can we guarantee a future where everyone has access to enough water to live with dignity.
But in times of drought, everyone talks about water. They are all experts and commentators.

Water is life and it is our responsibility to preserve it. The time has come to act, not out of despair, but out of awareness and respect for what keeps us alive
There are awareness campaigns that multiply, echoing in every corner of our region with calls to reduce consumption, it is the municipalities that implement restrictions on different less priority uses (…), some people, who finally adjust their habits… But why Why do we wait for the situation to worsen to an extreme level before we recognize the value of this essential resource? Why don’t we assume, once and for all, that water should be treated with the same value, whether it rains or shines, whether we are in a period of drought or abundance?
The truth is that, for many, water remains an invisible resource. We open the tap and wait for it to flow uninterruptedly, as if the reserves were infinite. It’s a disconcerting paradox: we treat oil as “black gold” and water as a basic, worthless right, forgetting that it is, in reality, a privilege that we need to protect. This negligent behavior, which leads us to value water only at critical moments, reveals a dangerous mentality that urgently needs transformation.
We are, in fact, facing a silent crisis. As climate change advances, the forest burns and the impacts on water resources become increasingly evident and catastrophic. Desertification advances, rivers dry up, biodiversity decreases and food security is put at risk. These are not science fiction scenarios, but our global reality. So why do we continue to treat water as an inexhaustible commodity?
Be part of the change, transform small habits into big acts. It is important to remember that each individual action, no matter how small, contributes to the overall approach and adaptation to climate. It is imperative that each of us recognize the impact of our individual actions on water consumption. Small changes to our lifestyle can make a big difference. Taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while brushing our teeth, fixing leaks, and using rainwater collection systems are some of the simple measures we can adopt in our daily lives.
By adopting these small, everyday actions we can make a big difference in preserving water. Public awareness and responsible action are essential in this process. We cannot expect miraculous solutions or depend exclusively on government actions.
Over the years, we have neglected its importance, treating it as an unlimited and free good of nature. The truth is that water is a finite resource and is becoming increasingly rare and precious. Adapting to the new circumstances of water scarcity resulting from climate change is a complex challenge. We cannot allow water scarcity to compromise our quality of life, our food security and the balance of ecosystems. It’s time to act intelligently, responsibly and conscientiously. Water is a limited resource, and we will only have a promising future if we learn to preserve and use it sustainably.
For all of this, I express my indignation here, not only at the waste, but at the general lack of awareness. As a society, we cannot continue to treat water as an endless resource. There is an urgent need to call for a change of mentality. We need to understand that, regardless of the situation of drought or abundance, the value of water must be unquestionable.
However, I also believe in hope. Increasingly, people, companies and regions are beginning to realize the impact of their choices and take conscious action. I believe that it is possible to reverse the current scenario, but to do so it is essential that everyone recognizes the importance of water in their daily lives and commits to protecting every drop. I believe it is possible to do all of this, and live in tune with sustainability.
Let this article serve as a reminder and a plea. Water is life and it is our responsibility to preserve it. The time has come to act, not out of despair, but out of awareness and respect for what keeps us alive.
Water is a treasure shared by everyone. Use it wisely, respectfully and gratefully.
