Bolsonaro criticizes nonconformity on the left with success on the right

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) criticized the nonconformity of left-wing leaders and activists with the recent electoral successes of right-wing candidates in Brazil, Argentina and the United States.

According to the former president, those who declare themselves “saviors of democracy” are the same ones who “trample” democracy “when they can”.

The former president’s reflections were published in the form of an article in Folha de São Paulothis Sunday (10).

In the text, Bolsonaro says that “some analysts and political scientists, uncomfortable with sovereign popular decisions, try to present many of these movements as if they were a shift ‘to the center’, but, according to the former president, ‘it is not’”.

“Just pay attention to the proposals recently approved at the polls”, continued the former president when highlighting the elections of the president of Argentina, Javier Milei; of Donald Trump, in the United States, and the Brazilian right-wing candidates who ran for councilor and mayor positions in this year’s municipal elections.

“In places where the people have been called to give their opinion, the majority choose order, development, progress, economic freedom, freedom of expression, respect for families and religion, patriotism. These are the flags that we, on the right, have been raising for years, even under serious authoritarian threats,” said Bolsonaro.

“Nothing can contain the conservative wave. Neither censorship, nor cancellations, nor economic boycott, nor police persecution, nor long, arbitrary and unjust arrests”, added the former president.

“Enemies of democracy”

Bolsonaro also criticized the left’s tactic of accusing the right of being “enemies of democracy”, when, according to the former president, “those who show difficulty in accepting democracy are the left, when the majority of the people decide on paths different from what they I would like”.

“When he can, like in Venezuela, he simply cheats, outright, the electoral result. When not, as now with President Donald Trump’s victorious return to the White House, he regrets having allowed his opponents on the right to contest the elections”, he wrote.

New leaders

The former president also said that “the left-wing scenario is one of aging and desolation” and praised the new right-wing leaders.

“The garden of politics only flourishes when it is irrigated by the popular will. When a political force becomes disconnected from majority sentiment, it inevitably withers. It may even resist for a while at the cost of repression and the shameless use of public budgets, but its fate is sealed. It is destined to become irrelevant, or even disappear,” said Bolsonaro.
