Sporting announces new coach: João Pereira is Ruben Amorim’s successor

Former full-back was commanding Alvalade’s B team. Amorim cannot officially be the new coach of Manchester United yet.

João Pereira, who commanded the ‘lions’ B team, is the new coach of the main team of Sporting, replacing Ruben Amorim, the Alvalade club announced today.

In a submission to the Securities Market Commission (CMVM), Sporting states that the new technical team “will immediately assume technical command”.

The Alvalade club does not reveal the duration of the new technical committee’s contract.

The former Portuguese international, who was a winger/winger, still has a short career as a coach, and always at Sporting so far: one season as an assistant and then two as a starter with the under-23s. He was coach of Sporting B, leaving the secondary team in 5th place in League 3 – Series B.

As a player, interestingly, he was trained at Benfica, just like Ruben Amorim. As a senior he was national champion at Luz, then moving on to Gil Vicente, Sporting de Braga, Sporting, Valencia, Hannover 96, again Sporting, Trabzonspor and… again Sporting, where he was national champion to end his career.

In addition to João Pereira, aged 40, the new technical team includes Tiago Teixeira, José Caldeira, António Pina, Hugo Tecelão, Tiago Ferreira and Luís Netountil the end of last season one of the sub-captains of the team led by Ruben Amorim, who now returns to Alvalade to join the technical team.

Amorim waits

Ruben Amorim is not yet the coach of Manchester United. Officially, no.

The reason is not new, it indicates: view of mandatory work to practice the profession in the United Kingdom, which the technician does not yet have.

The document should be issued this week. United have time, as the new coach’s first game will only be on the day November 24th.

No press conference to introduce Ruben Amorim is planned in Manchester.

Ruben Amorim said goodbye to Sporting with a victory against his previous club, SC Braga.
