He thus responded to several fears that Trump, after taking office, could try to mediate a peace agreement at the expense of Ukrainian interests.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot warned on Monday against jumping to conclusions about US policy under President-elect Donald Trump. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.
“When it comes to speculation about what the positions or initiatives of the new American administration might be, I think we should not get ahead of ourselves,” Barrot said at the Paris Peace Forum. At the annual meeting, world leaders, representatives of international organizations, civil society and of the private sector discuss the management of public affairs.
“We have to find time to cooperate with the (US) administration,” he said. He emphasized that France is ready for this because it considers it its duty to provide Ukraine with the means to repel Russian aggression.
According to the minister’s statements, the international community can “lose too much if Russia is allowed to continue with the approach of “who has the power, can do everything”. In future peace negotiations, “nothing can be achieved in Ukraine without Ukrainians”, he added.
The Washington Post reported at the end of the week that Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday and told him not to provoke more conflict. The Kremlin denied this news on Monday, saying it was “completely false information”.
Trump won the presidential election and in the past has expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and mocked the $175 billion in US aid earmarked for Ukraine. The 78-year-old former president also repeatedly said he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, without giving further details.
