Zelenski recognizes Brazil’s efforts, says new ambassador – 11/11/2024 – Panel

Brazil’s new ambassador to , Rafael de Mello Vidal, says that the relationship between the governments of the two countries, which went through turbulence in the recent past, is going through a good moment.

Two weeks ago, Vidal handed over his credentials to the president, a formality at the beginning of his work as Brazilian representative in the country. Then they both had a meeting lasting about 40 minutes

“A moment of better communication is being created. Ukraine understands the commitment of the Lula government. And the Brazilian government understands the sensitive areas for Ukraine, especially the affirmation of territorial integrity and security guarantees. Brazil at the UN has always positioned itself against colonialism and imperialism”, says the diplomat, who was previously ambassador to Angola.

According to him, not even the fact that Brazil belongs to the BRICS, a group of emerging countries that also has Brazil as a member, hinders the relationship. “On the contrary, being in the BRICS we can have a relationship with Russia that many cannot. It is an asset that Brazil can offer for peace”, he states.

The company insists on maintaining contacts with both sides of the conflict to facilitate a possible negotiation process. It is not a peace plan, he says.

“It’s a pre-plan, a series of measures of mutual trust to guarantee a framework for negotiations”, he states. A partner in this endeavor is the Chinese government, which was also willing to act as a facilitator at this stage.

This effort is recognized by the Ukrainian leader, says the Brazilian diplomat. “Ukrainians recognize the Brazilian government’s commitment to leaving its comfort zone to find a way out, not folding its arms,” ​​he states.

The ambassador does not see immediate changes in the context of the war with the victory of , even though the Republican has given indications that he may not give the same support to the Ukrainians as the Joe Biden government. “It’s still too early to know how Trump will behave when he takes office,” he said.
