Economist and philosopher Eduardo Giannetti said, in participation in the program WW Especialthat the rise of the populist right is due to widespread social discontent, which serves as a backdrop for this phenomenon.
“The backdrop of the rise of this populist right is the fact that a broad spectrum of society is very unhappy with the way things have taken and their own life.”
Giannetti points out that there was a latent pact in American society that each generation would live better than the previous one. “The children would live better than their parents, would have more opportunities, the world had a sense of continuity and this broke, the ‘American dream’ is over,” he argued.
For the philosopher, this scenario of uncertainty and fear creates fertile ground for the emergence of charismatic leaders who mobilize this discontent. He still tip three main factors for this situation:
- A fearful bet on globalization, which resulted in the entry of hundreds of millions of highly productive and low -cost Asian workers in the global labor market, dramatically affecting Western workers;
- The 2008-2009 financial crisis, which exposed an asymmetrical and unfair system where “gains are private and losses are socialized”, undermining the legitimacy of the economic system;
- The advent of new technologies, especially social media, which gave voice to a portion of previously silenced public opinion, breaking the hegemony of establishment traditional.
According to Giannetti, this combination of factors has created an environment of profound insecurity and discontent, conducive to the emergence of right -wing populists who promise simple solutions to complex problems.
