Poor like a church mouse or we have deep in your pocket, but can it be worse? What does it mean to be poor in the Czech Republic? Understanding numbers is not always quite easy.
Not poverty as poverty
We like to look at the West, but most Czechs do not think we could achieve the same results. After all, we are wrong, and in the evening news, words such as poverty or housing need are often inflected.
Of course, these problems relate to us, but we should understand specific concepts to get an idea of how we actually do.
For income poverty, it is necessary to realize that this is a relative term. It is a poverty in the context of a particular country, so it certainly does not mean that if someone is poor, it is as poor as starving children in Africa.
Poverty can also be compared to EU countries, because income poverty does not take into account regional differences in life costs or indebtedness and other parameters that we could get a better idea of how things are.
What do the numbers say?
Income poverty depends on the so -called median of net income, which is about CZK 31,000. The income poverty limit is set at 60 % of this amount, based on 18,600 net per month per individual.
If an individual has less than CZK 18,600 net per month, then it is endangered by income poverty according to this calculation.
In the case of families, the calculation is fundamentally complicated and calculated according to the so -called equivalent scale. In practice, this means that for the first adult, CZK 18,600 is expected, for the second adult, half of this amount is calculated, only a third of the child under 14 years. Families have different costs than individuals, and so the poverty boundaries for the family are determined just as follows.
How do the Czechs do?
Although you know whether your income is higher or lower than the set limit of income method, if we want to know how the Czechs are doing, we must know other numbers.
First, there is a relatively significant difference between men and women’s income. By comparing the median for these two groups, we find that women’s income is about 5 thousand lower. It follows from the logic of the matter that the poverty is the most threatened parents and seniors and especially if they are women. Next, income poverty often applies to persons working for minimum wages and part -time or people of the long -term or unemployed.
Although the case differs from the case, these people most struggle with housing expenditure, which in their case often represent up to 40 % of income. Insufficiently high intake is reflected in the quality of the diet and of course the possibility of saving. Social exclusion is also a significant problem. This affects children and adults. The inability to participate in leisure or secondary school activities plays an important role and affects the life of individuals both in terms of mental well -being, in self -development and future professional opportunities.
There are about a million inhabitants in the Czech Republic, which is below the income poverty line and the other two million are approaching this limit. Although this may seem like a large part of the population of our relatively small country, within the EU, the Czech Republic has long been a country with the lowest proportion of inhabitants endangered by poverty, also thanks to a solidarity -set way of social support.
However, the methodology of comparing poverty between states is often criticized and, as already mentioned, does not reflect various important aspects.
