In an interview with CNN InternationalPresident Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said he will only “think about 2026” and did not confirm that he will seek re-election in two years.

“I will think about 2026 in 2026. If I have many parties supporting me, I will discuss this (re-election) calmly”, said Lula in an exclusive interview with journalist Christiane Amanpour.

When asked about his age – Lula is now 79 years old; in a new term, when he arrives in 2030, he would have 85 -, Lula said that “governing is not like playing football”.

“Governing is not about exercising or playing sports. It is not youth that will solve the problems of global governance, but the competence, the mentality of the ruler”, he stated.

“If the parties understood that there is no other candidate to face someone from the extreme right […] obviously, I will be willing to run again”, he added.

Lula, however, said that he “hopes that this will not be necessary” and that new candidates will emerge to promote a “great political renewal” in the country.
