Donald Trump and Olaf Scholz agreed to work together to restore peace in Europe

Scholz congratulated Trump on his election victory.

US President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday, Berlin said, adding that the leaders “agreed to cooperate in order to return to peace in Europe”. TASR informs about it based on the report of the AFP news agency.

According to chancellor spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, Scholz, who is mired in a political crisis and faces early elections in early 2025, congratulated Trump on his election victory.

They discussed German-American relations and current geopolitical issues

“The two exchanged views on German-American relations as well as current geopolitical issues. The chancellor emphasized the government’s willingness to continue the decades-long successful cooperation between the governments of both countries,” said Hebestreit.

“They also agreed to work together to restore peace in Europe,” he added.

Trump’s election has the potential to reverse the nearly three-year conflict in Ukraine, as he insists on a quick end to the fighting and questions the multibillion-dollar aid Washington has provided to Kiev.

During his election campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to quickly end the war in Ukraine – even before he was sworn in – but without detailing his steps, AFP reports. Meanwhile, Trump also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and urged him not to escalate the war in Ukraine, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.

During his previous term in the White House, Trump “scolded” NATO ally Germany for insufficient defense spending, as well as trade and other issues.

Scholz had already congratulated Trump on Wednesday and urged him to continue close transatlantic ties, telling him: “We are better together.”
