Minutes matter in a stroke. The sooner the patient receives the necessary help, the greater the chance of saving brain functions and returning to normal life. This was stated by neurologist Bassam Al Sabti from Agel Bratislava Hospital.
“The main problem is that many people they do not recognize the first signs of a stroke, or hesitate to call for help,” Al Sabti explained. The key is to be able to recognize the most common symptoms of a stroke. They are sudden asymmetry of the face, inability to raise one of the hands or incomprehensible speech. They are also known by the abbreviation FAST (from English face, arms, speech, time).
The neurologist pointed out that even mild symptoms can be a sign that something is going on. Emergency services must be called immediately. “Don’t wait for the condition to improve – every second of delay can mean more damage to the brain,” added Al Sabti. The neurologist added that after an injury to the musculoskeletal system, rehabilitation is necessary. One of the most common the consequences of a stroke are paralysis of limbs or loss of motor functions.
Prevention against stroke can be a balanced diet, enough exercise or maintaining an optimal level of blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes control. According to the expert, the risk factors are high blood pressure, smoking and obesity. “Regular examinations and active health care are important steps to reduce the incidence of stroke,” he pointed out.
