Despite the improvement of the system for the sale of electronic highway signs for the benefit of users, it happens that motorists make mistakes when buying them due to carelessness or being pressed for time. In view of the upcoming start of the summer holiday season, the National Highways Company (NDS) has highlighted the five most common mistakes that motorists should avoid. They often lead to unnecessary complications, informed the media communication department of the NDS.
Errors in entered data are extremely common. The alpha and omega for motorists should therefore be checking the confirmation of payment of the electronic highway stamp. “We are faced with the fact that the client is convinced that he bought a highway stamp, so it is a mystery to him why he got a fine for driving on the highway without a highway stamp.”
“Subsequently, after a thorough analysis, we find that there was, for example, an error when entering the vehicle’s registration number,” said Peter Braška, director of the NDS billing and IT department. In addition to full concentration when entering data, he also recommended a thorough check of the payment document. If the error is discovered in time, it can be corrected.
A special case is when the motorist does not receive a confirmation of payment at all. This could be for a number of reasons, from an incorrectly entered email address to a failed payment. Highwaymen advised that each time it is necessary to check whether the confirmation has actually been received by the buyer. Only then is he surethat he has actually purchased the highway stamp. If the motorist discovers that a non-transferable payment is to blame, he should repeat the payment. The funds will be returned to the account automatically. If this does not happen by chance, you can ask them back via the form on the website www.eznamka.sk.
“It also happens that the family wants to surprise one of the members with an unusual gift – a highway stamp. So they buy it without his knowledge and they don’t even notice the automatic warning when entering data that a valid highway stamp is currently purchased for the given vehicle,” pointed out from the media communication of the NDS. In this case, you can request a refund on the same website. If the motorist fully concentrates on the entire purchase process, he will avoid complications.
Motorists often pay extra for unofficial sellers, though NDS regularly informs that the only official sales e-shop is www.eznamka.sk. Here, motorists can buy a highway stamp for guaranteed, legally established prices. Various intermediary websites also operate on the market, which charge various additional fees in addition to the price of the highway stamp itself.
Motorists recently calculated that motorists in 2025 on purchases via unofficial websites they overpaid more than four million euros, without any added value. Not to mention the fake portals that do not buy stamps at all and, moreover, motorists hand over personal data to an anonymous entity.
“Even an experienced driver may make a wrong turn or simply unplannedly go to a tolled section of the highway and realize it only when looking at the traffic signs signaling the tolling of the section. In such a situation, it is important to maintain balance. Sudden changes in driving direction or risky maneuvers in an attempt to leave the highway can significantly increase the risk of a traffic accident.” noted NDS.
The toll stamp must be purchased without undue delay at the nearest gas station or online on the same calendar day. Additional purchase is an exceptional situation – highway officials do not recommend motorists to rely solely on the fact that they will buy a stamp somewhere along the road. “Inspections take place across the entire highway network and the driver can be checked practically anywhere while driving. Therefore, a simple rule applies – it is best to go on the highway only with a valid highway stamp,” added NDS.
