This Monday (11), the Civil Police carried out 11 search and seizure warrants against suspects involved in a scheme to manipulate football matches in Rio de Janeiro and money laundering. Operation VAR, from the Consumer Police, investigates alleged fraud that occurred during series B of this year’s Carioca Championship.

One of the targets was arrested by Interpol on Friday (8) in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. The warrants were issued by the Fan and Major Events Court.

According to the Civil Police, the suspicion is that manipulated results favored bettors. The investigation began after a game in which a club won 3-1 in the first half, but came from behind and lost 5-3, benefiting a significant volume of sports bets placed with a company in Asia.

The situation caught the attention of the Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Ferj), which reported the case to the Civil Police.
