Departure was surrounded by security concerns and precautions due to episodes of violence and hostility involving Israelis in recent weeks in Europe
French police confirmed this Friday (15) that they arrested two fans involved in confusion in the match between the teams of and , this Thursday (14), in the group stage of the UEFA Nations League. The match was surrounded by security concerns and precautions due to episodes of violence and hostility involving Israeli fans in recent weeks.
The two fans were involved in a fight in the stands of the Stade de France, on the outskirts of Paris. One of them was detained during the match, in the stadium itself. And another was arrested at the end of the match, with the help of the site’s security cameras. “A fight broke out. But we were extremely reactive. So, the incident was quickly resolved,” said police chief Laurent Nunez, in an interview with France 2.
The fights started about 10 minutes after the start of the game, in the upper part of the stands behind one of the goals. Some of those involved had Israeli flags hanging on their backs. It was unclear what caused the confusion and security quickly intervened. The match ended in a goalless draw, with no further incidents inside the stadium.
The police had mobilized thousands of officers, increasing security following the episode of violence in Amsterdam before and after a Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Dutch authorities said fans from both sides were involved in the melee. The attacks on Maccabi fans sparked outrage and were widely condemned as anti-Semitic.
