Accused of sexual crimes, Matt Gaetz gives up being US Attorney General

Matt Gaetz withdrew his bid to be U.S. attorney general in a major defeat for conservatives who wanted him to dramatically overhaul the Justice Department under President-elect Donald Trump.

Gaetz has been the target of intense scrutiny following a long-running House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations that he engaged in sexual misconduct, including having sex with a minor. The Justice Department also investigated Gaetz for alleged sex trafficking of a minor, but informed his lawyers last year that the investigation was closed without charges.

Gaetz, a former Florida congressman, has denied any wrongdoing.
