The OAB said in a note signed by the entity’s national president, Beto Simonetti, that justice cannot be done without due legal process and that it is necessary “absolute respect for the prerogatives of the legal profession, which include access to the case files, the right to oral arguments and secrecy of communications”.

The Order has already asked Moraes to adopt measures for lawyers’ access to the records of cases involving coup plots and entered into a case against a defendant because there is no provision in the court’s rules.

In the note, the entity also urges political leaders to repudiate the violence and says it awaits more information about the investigations and the measures adopted by the organization to evaluate practical actions it could take.

“We call on the leaders of political parties and groups, of different ideologies, to encourage their followers to remove any type of violence, political terrorism, attempted coup d’état and appreciation of authoritarianism from Brazil.”

In addition to the OAB, the AMB (Association of Brazilian Magistrates) and Ajufe (Association of Federal Judges of Brazil) expressed concern in a public statement about the plan to kill authorities and demanded the adoption of measures and a responsible investigation.

“Any attempt to attack the life or physical integrity of members of the Judiciary and candidates democratically elected by citizens must be investigated with the utmost responsibility, in accordance with the Constitution and laws”, says the AMB .

Ajufe states that it is “indispensable that those responsible are identified and that the necessary measures are adopted so that practices of this nature are exemplarily combatted with the rigor of the law”.
