Trump meets with Canadian prime minister at Mar-a-Lago

The meeting with Justin Trudeau took place after the North American suggested imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian products

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau (Liberal Party of Canada, center-left), met with the President-elect of the United States, (Republican Party), in Mar-a-Lago (Florida) on Friday (29. Nov.2024) The meeting, not previously announced, took place after the North American suggested increasing tariffs on Canadian products.

Trump stated on Monday (Nov 25) that he will impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada with the aim of stopping what he called an invasion of “drugs” e “illegal immigrants”. The Republican also stated that he will charge an additional 10% in tariffs on Chinese products.

The Canadian delegation was made up of the Minister of Public Security, Dominic LeBlanc, and Trudeau’s chief of staff, Katie Telford.

Before the trip, the prime minister said he would resolve the tariff issue by talking to Trump. “We will work together to address some of the concerns. […] But ultimately, it is through the many constructive conversations I will have with President Trump that we will keep moving forward on the right path for all Canadians.”Trudeau told reporters.
