International Atomic Energy Agency plans visit to Iran and mentions talks

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, signaled that it is in initial talks with Iranian authorities so that supervision of the Persian country’s nuclear material can be carried out. The inspection is provided for in the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran to end the war in the Middle East.

In a press conference this Friday (26) Grossi highlighted that he feels “optimistic” about a visit to Tehran soon and said he believes that Iran’s nuclear material has not been moved since the agency’s last inspection in 2025. “But confirmation is needed,” he warned.

Grossi stated that the presence of the IAEA, a branch of the United Nations (UN), andm Persian territory is crucial to the credibility of the peace agreement.

“This agreement has several parts, and provides for supervision of nuclear material. In order to have supervision, an inspection is necessary. The technical work has begun. We hope to be there soon. Regarding the timing of the visit, it is important, but not essential. It doesn’t matter if we go in a week or two,” he said
