The vote on the impeachment process of the president of Corinthians, was suspended on Monday night (2) after a preliminary decision granted by judge Clara Maria Araújo Xavier, of the São Paulo Court of Justice. The decision occurred moments before the start of the extraordinary meeting of the Deliberative Council, at Parque São Jorge, where councilors were already prepared to vote on Melo’s possible removal. The injunction ordered the suspension of the vote based on a report from the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission, which recommended the interruption of the process until the conclusion of the police investigation into alleged irregularities in the club’s sponsorship contract with .

If the decision was not complied with, the Court imposed a fine of R$100,000. Augusto Melo delivered the injunction personally to the president of the Deliberative Council, Romeu Tuma Júnior, who read the document in plenary and announced the postponement of the vote. “The meeting is suspended and will be rescheduled at an appropriate time,” said Tuma Júnior.

The vote generated great mobilization in Parque São Jorge, with the presence of hundreds of organized fans who demonstrated support for Melo, chanting “there will be no coup”. A strong security scheme was set up in the surrounding area, involving 480 police officers, including riot troops and cavalry. After the suspension, Augusto Melo thanked the counselors and reinforced the need for unity. “I ask for help from all of you in this management to get Corinthians out of this situation. Go, Corinthians”, he declared.

Context of impeachment

The impeachment request against Melo is based on alleged irregularities in the contract with VaideBet, which is still under investigation. The authors of the request allege that the management had damaged the club’s image and violated the General Sports Law. There is still another impeachment request to be analyzed, based on a report from the Guidance Council (CORI), which points to reckless management.

According to Corinthians’ statutes, the reasons for dismissing a president include statutory infractions, irregular or reckless management, and final judicial convictions. The meeting was suspended, but the impeachment process remains a central topic at the club, with new developments expected soon.
