One of the references in supporting the most fragile people has died: Lasalete Piedade.
Lasalete was 73 years old and died this Wednesday. He leaves a legacy of compassion, solidarity and humanity, reads a statement sent to ZAP.
Lasalete was known as the “mother of the poor” of Portothe city where he was born and where he has always lived.
Passed by extreme poverty when I was a child. She was then taken in by a religious institution, where she received training and education until adulthood.
It was at this stage that the essentials of his life began to emerge: dignification of povertysomething that guided his life and work.
In the 1990s, Lasalete Piedade founded the Associação Migalha de Amor, known as Coração da Cidade. It served complete meals to 50 people every day. With help from family and friends.
His motto was: “More important than verbalizing doctrines is humanizing attitudes”.
At the beginning of this century, the institution began to serve 875 meals per day to homeless people, drug addicts and migrants. Later it also began to support the unemployed, the elderly and children.
In 2004, it already provided monthly assistance to 2,000 peopleincluding 500 children.
The economic crisis gave rise to the VER – Vidas em Risco association in 2010, which offered food, clinical, legal and housing support to more than 2 thousand people per month.
Five years later, Lasalete created the AI – Help Immediate program, eliminating bureaucracy and responding to the needs of 3,600 people monthly.
Me on pandemic reopened the doors of Coração da Cidade, organizing volunteers to cook 200 kg of rice per day and provide food support to families in need.
One example for volunteers and beneficiaries. The “Mother of the Poor” was a true defender of human dignity, concludes the statement.
