The magnitude 7 earthquake struck off the coast of northern California, causing damage to homes and power outages for more than 10,000 people.
along both the coasts of northern California and southern Oregon—an area that includes about 4.7 million people—was subsequently revoked.
Olivia Cobian, owner of the Gingerbread Mansion Inn in Ferndale, where the quake was epicenter, about 250 miles north of San Francisco, said the inside of the inn “looks like a war zone. We have huge cast iron fireplaces that have been lifted and moved, everything has fallen, broken.”
Some areas, including Berkeley in northern California, issued evacuation orders because of the tsunami threat.
After the initial tremor of 7 Richter there were many aftershocks.
