Former president of the Chamber’s Public Security Committee, the secretary defends him against criticism for episodes of and states that São Paulo’s is one of the best in the country.
“There’s no point in wanting to say now that São Paulo’s Secretary of Public Security is responsible,” says Sanderson, who is a friend of Derrite. “Public Security in São Paulo is good security. Public Security in São Paulo, considering the size of the population, is one of the best in Brazil.”
He describes the secretary as “balanced, thoughtful and quite calm”. “You can call Derrite anything but unbalanced,” he says. “That’s why I say, you can’t use a sporadic, isolated case, among 18 million occurrences [anuais em São Paulo].”
In the deputy’s assessment, states must provide better working conditions for professionals, including psychiatric care. “Because the police officer who arrests the same guy five times a month will go crazy.”
Sanderson also argues that the problem involves the appreciation of police officers. “If this type of situation is happening, what are we going to do? Let’s improve training, let’s empower the internal affairs bodies and give the internal affairs departments the autonomy to have the strength to punish and the bad police officers to be purged. The person who makes this type of error cannot be in a police force. You will work elsewhere, but not in the police, which has the duty to, precisely, protect the population.”
