Rome/Damascus – In view of the situation in Syria, Italy and Great Britain are also temporarily suspending their asylum procedures for people from the civil war country. This is following the example of other European partners, said the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In Austria, Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Monday commissioned Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (both ÖVP) to suspend all ongoing Syrian asylum applications and to review all grants of asylum. The EU, however, warned against a hasty debate about returns to Syria.
