If you are interested in film in Vienna – or in fish – sooner or later you will come across the Zyphius. The anatomically strangely shaped mythical sea creature has adorned the film museum as a logo since its founding in 1964. At that time, the two founders Peter Kubelka and Peter Konlechner hired the painter and graphic artist Gertie Fröhlich (1930–2020). According to legend, she discovered the creature in a 1959 issue of the monthly magazine promoting artistic advertising Commercial graphics and found it fitting because the curious animal can live on both land and water. And should never go under – like the film museum itself.
