“Communication and public speaking, in my opinion, are the most important and profitable skills there are,” says Giovanni. He cites as examples moments in life when people lose professional opportunities or are less valued because they are unable to express themselves in the best way.

And the situation is even worse when you add a gender element. “When I started participating [dos torneios de oratória e debate]no woman had won any competition”, says Micarla, who specialized in tips for this audience.

She says she began to be interested in communication when she was six years old. As he grew up, however, this changed — against his will.

“I was hearing that showing up was bad, I was being encouraged not to share my ideas, I was being interrupted… Until I felt as if my voice had been completely silenced.”

His childhood interest returned with his discovery of the world of competitive debates and public speaking championships. “I became the first Brazilian woman to win a tournament in public speaking and debate,” says Micarla.

Giovanni also won both competitions. In her case, it was part of a journey to overcome childhood shyness and antisocial behavior. He took his first step by joining a theater group in high school. Later, while attending law school, he came into contact with the skills that would transform his life.

He took several public speaking courses, participated in numerous tournaments — some of which were international, in English — and won several of them. At first, he imagined that he would use communication resources to promote himself as a lawyer, but he ended up taking another path.

He started teaching everything he had learned on social media, where he uses the nickname “El professor of oratory”, due to his resemblance to the character “Professor” from the series “A Casa de Papel”.

“I can say with absolute certainty: communication, oratory, charisma and persuasion are trainable skills,” says Giovanni.

In their classes at CasaFolha, Giovanni and Micarla cover various public speaking topics, such as diction and voice control, body posture, gesticulation, conciseness and “storytelling”. They also cover themes of the so-called “art of influencing people”, with strategies to create a good first impression and become more pleasant in social circles.

The duo’s course is part of the “Communication and Creativity” journey, which already includes classes from filmmaker José Padilha.

The platform still has two other journeys. One of them, “Money and career”, has courses such as that of Pedro Malan, the executive, who talks about leadership and sustainability, and that of economist George Wachsmann, partner at BTG Pactual,.

The third journey is called “Personal transformation and well-being” and has courses like “Fitness: what works for real change”, in which Bruno Gualano .
