The religious Frei Betto, a friend of Lula and former advisor to the Presidency in his first term, said in an interview with Breeza magazine that he was in favor of the recreational use of .

He also told the publication that he once took ayahuasca (a psychedelic Amazonian plant) and for an hour he saw Machu Picchu (Inca ruin in Peru) in front of him.

Betto also said that religion and drugs are not incompatible. “All religious traditions, in some way, used some drug”, he declared to the magazine, dedicated to topics related to marijuana.

He stated that, to combat chemical dependency generated by drugs, it is necessary to have affection. “People get into drug addiction due to a lack of affection, and just as this is the entry door, so is the exit door.”

Betto also discussed other topics in the interview. He advocated an end to celibacy for priests. For the religious, this requirement leads them to resort to alcohol.

“Celibacy should be optional, the individual alone does not have the vocation to deal with loneliness and seek company in alcohol,” he said. According to him, there are alcohol abuse rehabilitation clinics for priests and other members of the Catholic Church.

Betto also criticized the so-called bullet bench in the National Congress. For him, “the bullet bench is a partner of drug kingpins.”
