Roberto Kalil Filho states that the process is “relatively simple”; is scheduled for 7am on Thursday (Dec 12)
The president’s (PT) personal doctor, Roberto Kalil Filho, said this Wednesday (Dec 11, 2024) that what the PT member will undergo on Thursday (Dec 12) was already scheduled. He declared that it was something “relatively simple”.
“The procedure was scheduled for tomorrow morning. We were going to disclose it to you, because this is not hiding information. However, the president and Mrs. Janja made a point of putting it in the bulletin before the procedure. Because we, the medical team, had agreed to carry out the procedure and then, at the press conference, we gave all the satisfaction that the press deserves”, he told journalists at the door of Hospital Sírio Libanês, in São Paulo.
“When you drain a hematoma, there is a small possibility, in the future, that the small arteries in the meninges will still cause a small amount of bleeding. This is not impossible to happen. This complementary procedure to the surgical procedure is to minimize the risk of this happening in the future. It is a low-risk procedure that was discussed a lot with the average team today”said Kalil Filho.
NEW PROCEDURE
The objective is to interrupt the flow in an artery that irrigates the membrane that covers the brain, the meninges. The team will, in some way, block blood circulation in the area of the clot to prevent further bleeding like the one that Lula, 79 years old, suffered on Monday (Dec 9) and that at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in São Paulo. The Sírio Libanês Hospital press office stated that the procedure was planned post-operatively and is not a new surgery. “As part of the therapeutic program, the surgery will be completed with an endovascular procedure (embolization of the middle meningeal artery) tomorrow morning,” says medical bulletin (read below).
Earlier, the hospital issued a first medical bulletin. He stated that Lula remains hospitalized in the ICU for “treatment of hemorrhage intracranial”without complications. He also said that the president is lucid, talking and that he spent the night well, but that he still has a drain in his head while he awaits further tests – which was expected.
It had not been informed, however, that the new procedure would be carried out.
The intracranial hemorrhage is a consequence of that suffered by Lula on October 19, 2024. The fall in the bathroom of the Palácio da Alvorada resulted in an injury “cut-contusion in the occipital region” –a cut on the back of the head. It was needed on site. He was to return to taking long plane trips on November 10, 2024.
Lula is under the care of the medical team led by Roberto Kalil Filho and Ana Helena Germoglio.

- 9.dez.2024 – Lula informs Kalil around 15h who has headaches;
- 9.dez.2024 – the president goes to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in Brasília and undergoes 2 tests, a CT scan and an MRI. The results indicate that it is necessary to take the PT member to São Paulo;
- 9.dez.2024 – the FAB plane with Lula on board takes off from Brasília around 23h;
- 10.dez.2024 – the FAB plane lands in São Paulo at 0h24;
- 10.dez.2024 – Lula undergoes surgery (understand how it went in the infographic below) which lasted around 3 hours;
- 10.dez.2024 – to the 4hthe first medical bulletin on the president’s health status is released.
