Former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was hospitalized after being injured during an official trip to Luxembourg, her office announced on Friday (13) in a statement.

Pelosi spokesman Ian Krager did not provide details about her condition, the injury or how it occurred in the statement, other than that she was injured during “an official engagement” by a congressional delegation marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a confrontation from World War II.

According to the newspaper The New York TimesPelosi tripped while descending the marble staircase of the Grand Ducal Palace and suffered a hard fall, according to a person familiar with the incident who was not authorized to comment and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Pelosi, 84, was admitted to a hospital and “is receiving excellent treatment from doctors and healthcare professionals,” Krager said in the statement. She “continues to work” but is “unable to participate” in the remaining events of the trip.

Pelosi, the first and only woman to be speaker of the U.S. House, resigned from the position in 2022, saying she wanted to make room for a new generation of Democratic leaders.

Pelosi worked behind the scenes to encourage and guide Democratic lawmakers as they pressured President Joe Biden to drop his re-election bid earlier this year, highlighting her lasting influence on the party.
