National president of the PDT, Carlos Lupi says he favors the former mayor of Belo Horizonte Alexandre Kalil, who is seeking the position.
“Kalil was being treated like Pacheco’s spare tire by President Lula’s allies, and this irritated him a lot”, says Lupi.
Kalil joined the PDT at the beginning of the year with the promise of being a candidate for the government of Minas Gerais.
He has been cited as a plan B for Lula’s campaign in the event of Pacheco’s withdrawal, but he resists identifying himself so directly with the president, as he did in 2022. On that occasion, he lost to Romeu Zema (Novo) in the first round.
“Kalil’s posture will depend on the seams he makes. It will be his decision, and I will respect it”, says Lupi.
The former mayor prefers to maintain a more independent attitude. To this end, he has been talking to parties of different ideological orientations, from the PSOL-Rede federation to the PSDB.
