Pelé passes two markers from Bulgaria’s violent defense, in a game at Goodison Park, in Liverpool, during the World Cup in England

The 1966 World Cup, played in England, does not bring back good memories for Brazilian football. After the second championship, in 1958 and 1962, they had a poor campaign and only came in eleventh place, being eliminated in the first phase. The Brazilian Sports Confederation, currently the CBF, lacked organization, but it was not superb. and scored the goals in the debut against Bulgaria, in Liverpool, 2-0. Then, with the King absent because of an injury, the team led by Vicente Feola lost to Hungary: 3-1, a negative score that was repeated against Portugal. In that game, Pelé was back, but was the target of opponent violence.

As the first World Cup broadcast live on TV, via satellite, was in 1970, in Mexico, in 1966 Brazilians still followed the World Cup on . However, TV Tupi had exclusivity to show the tapes days after the matches. The station’s main narrator was Oduvaldo Cozzi, mentioned in yesterday’s column. Unlike the previous four World Cups, when he was on the radio, in 1966, Cozzi had already migrated to television.

Now follow the goals from the team’s three matches in the 1966 World Cup in the voice of Oduvaldo Cozzi. An addendum: the debut against Bulgaria was Pelé and Garrincha’s last official game together. The duo has never been defeated wearing the national team shirt.
