More than a hundred rescuers and technicians participated in the rescue operation.
On Wednesday morning, rescuers managed to free the 32-year-old Italian caver Ottavia Pianová, who fell and got stuck about five meters underground on Saturday while exploring a hitherto unknown part of the Abisso Bueno Fonteno cave in northern Italy. TASR informs based on the reports of the DPA and AP agencies.
More than a hundred rescuers and technicians participated in the rescue operation near the city of Bergamo, and after the rescue, the woman was taken to the hospital by helicopter.
Pianová suffered fractures to her face, ribs and knee
As a result of the fall, Pianová suffered multiple fractures on her face, ribs and knee, reports the AP agency. The place where she got stuck is about a four hour walk from the cave entrance. The rescuers used explosives to widen some of the narrow parts of the cave, allowing passage for the stretcher on which Pianová was subsequently transferred.
The rescuers initially assumed that her rescue would continue for another day and a half. According to AP, during the rescue operation, they communicated with Pianova every 90 minutes and made sure she was okay.
Italian forces already rescued a woman from the same cave in July 2023, while the rescue operation then lasted two days. This time, Pianová returned to the Abisso Bueno Fonteno cave on the northern shore of Lake Lago d’Iseo as a member of a project whose goal was to explore the cave in more detail and create accurate maps of it, reports DPA.
