COP in Belém must have 2 ports for cruise accommodation – 12/19/2024 – Panel

The organization of , the (United Nations) climate conference, had to adjust plans and increase to two the number of ports in the city of (PA) that will receive vessels for accommodation during the event.

As shown by Sheetwas one of the measures adopted by the organization —which involves the government () and the local government of Helder Barbalho (MDB)— to address the lack of beds in the city during the COP.

Initially, the plan was to expand the port of Belém so that vessels could be docked, adding 4,500 beds to the disposal of event participants.

To do this, it would be necessary to dredge Guajará Bay, in the capital of Pará. The work was authorized, but faced obstacles.

Given this, the event organizers decided to change their plans: suspend dredging, at least for now, and use the port of Outeiro, an international terminal with greater capacity, as support.

Cruises must stay in Outeiro, while smaller vessels will be located in the Port of Belém.

As this new port was not initially part of the event’s initial logistics, work will be carried out to build a bridge to connect the waterway terminal to the conference stages.

The work, according to the government of Pará, is already at an advanced stage. The expectation is that the journey between the port and the COP site will be 30 minutes, and that the total number of beds will also be increased.
